Parker Street Ministries: Nod to Nonprofits Tour Series
Join us on Friday, June 23, 2017, at the Lakeland Chamber's sixth stop on its first-ever Nod to Nonprofits Tour Series: Parker Street Ministries. The event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. with an introduction of the ministry from Executive Director Tim Mitchell. At 10:20, we are asking guests to participate in a unique way. When Tim Mitchell was asked about the biggest impact he has seen for Parker Street Ministries in the neighborhood, his answer was “For the first time we are seeing hope.” It used to be that PSM kids had few positive plans for their futures. They saw unemployment and even jail. Today they are talking about goals and staying in school. It seems like a small thing, but HOPE IS HUGE! It is transformative. We invite you to inspire our kids through a Career-ousel. The big idea is to get kids excited about school and the Power of Stay--of committing to education now and connecting that to their futures. We also just want to provide exposure to a variety of careers. For this event we are expecting up to 100 students to walk through a Career-ousel in a fun, speed-dating type format. We ask business leaders to engage with the students at stations or to help facilitate the movement from station-to-station.
Business leaders should be prepared to give a 3 minute presentation about themselves encompassing:
- Stepping stones that helped you get to your profession
- Internal resources you called upon to get there: for example study skills, determination
- Obstacles or detours that you worked through, if any
- Allow the kids to pick from reading, math, science, social studies, and then talk about how you use it in your profession
- After your talk, allow for an extra minute of questions
- Use a visual (for example an ENT could bring a model of an ear, a draftsman could bring blueprints)
Those who desire to stay may participate in a Q&A debrief with Tim Mitchell for about 10 minutes.
You are not required to participate in a Career-ousel to attend this event. You may register as a Career-ousel Participant (more information will be emailed to you) or for the regular Tour Ticket.
