The Polk County Veterans Council will be conducting its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Lakeland’s Veterans Memorial Park at 10 a.m., on Saturday, November 10, 2018. A parade will follow the ceremony. The Veterans Council has selected as this year’s theme a tribute to James Henry Mills, Fort Meade native and the only Polk County soldier to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. His citation describes his conspicuous gallantry in the Italian campaign of WWII. A beautiful monument stands in the park honoring Mills. Dedicated in 1986, the monument is getting a much-needed facelift. Additionally, an interpretive plaque will be unveiled that tells the story of Mills’ life and his tragic murder on Veterans Day, November 11, 1973. Following the ceremony, the annual parade will step off traveling from the RP Funding Center west lot along Lemon St and ending at Munn Park. Memorial Ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in Veterans Park, located at 150 Lake Beulah Dr, Lakeland, FL 33815 (behind the RP Funding Center).
